What is a Promoter Girl Comp Table?

Nightclubs and pool parties in Las Vegas use a specific type of promotion that they run to drive business and make the venue look better. They invite groups of attractive Vegas girls (traditionally groups of 6 or more) and give them a free bottle by arriving and checking in at the club when it opens. Ladies who can't show up early for a comp are better served getting on the Las Vegas guest list.

The girls are typically given a pretty good location, are given a complimentary (comp) bottle to start their night, and the club looks better with good-looking party girls at its tables. The ladies typically have the table until it gets sold or until the customer who booked bottle service the table shows up, and then usually given the option of either mixing with the buyers coming in (if they want the girls there) or giving up the table entirely.

Nightclubs tend to use comps to fill out their tables more than day clubs, as there are much fewer options for day clubs (meaning more people show up to each one), and the larger ones fill up quite quickly.

Why Do Promoters Have Comp Tables?

It benefits the club greatly to fill the club up (at least initially) with tables full of girls – it creates more energy in the place, the ambiance is better, and guys are naturally drawn to places that seem like it's full of girls. Free tables are also a way to get girls to come to that club and to come early (since comp tables have to arrive when doors first open). With numerous options for ladies to pick from, it's a nice incentive to offer attractive females to attend, and a club with a smaller headliner than its competition is more likely to give out comps to girls, as opposed to big headliners where tables get sold out, and there isn't anything to give out.

NOTE: The bigger the event, the more attractive the girls have to be to get a comp, if at all. This can lead to many angry words and sometimes even tears at the door, and one of the reasons comps are such a tricky thing to deal with in Las Vegas nightlife. More on that below.

It's always proper etiquette to take care of the cocktail server at your table, especially since the bottle is free. It doesn't have to be a huge tip, but somewhere in the range of $75-$100 is customary.

My Promoter Has Asked for Pictures?

As weird and invasive as it sounds, it happens a lot. Most will try and add your group to the list and focus on getting you into the club and hoping you'll latch on to someone's table inside (as girls often do). However, if the girls are specifically asking for a comp, it's then up to the promoter, girl-guy, or host to "vet" the girls and then make a judgment call on the group. It's a weird situation for both the promoter and the group, but ultimately, it's a way to try and save the girls some dignity – imagine being told your table is set and then arriving at the club and being turned away? With that in mind, it's best to try and be as straight up with your contact as best you can (please don't "catfish"!), and he will do the same for you.

Please keep in mind that any comp is worth about $1,300 to the club, between the real estate and the comped alcohol, so they get very particular when approving which comps get sat. Conversely, if it's a slower event where they aren't overbooked with tables, they may just seat most comp reservations, which wouldn't be the case on a busier night. Please do not assume that a comp is available every time.

My Promoter Comp Was Denied?

There are many cases in which a girl comp can get denied, not least of which we touched on above. Please remember that giving out a comp, like any other promotion, is subject to availability, and therefore not a guaranteed reservation. The club's management reserves all rights to change its mind on all such reservations, especially since they are free, not paid reservations.

Here are some examples of why a comp could get denied:

• You showed up too late to check-in – giving out comps is a way to drive bodies to the club early; those who show up after are usually denied the table and just get let in without any further perks. Expect to arrive by 11 pm for nightclubs, noon for day clubs to check-in for a comp.
• You showed up with missing girls – 6 is pretty much the magic number for clubs to seat a comp (don't ask me how they came up with that number), and you could be denied the comp entirely by showing up with less.
• Influx of reservations – if the club has a choice between selling a table and giving away a table, they are going to choose to sell the spot 10 times out of 10. There are cases (albeit rare) in which you confirm your reservation during the day and club management decides to cut off comps due to the high number of paid reservations.
• The podium just says "no" – whether it's the promoter's fault for not thoroughly vetting the group, the group for not dressing up enough, or whatever reason, there are times when the managers making the call at the podium doesn't think the group fits the criteria of ladies that they're looking to give a comp bottle to.

It's a tough conversation to have with a group whenever a comp is denied, whether it's the VIP host at the door who has to tell the girls "no," or the independent host promoter whose phone will be blowing up from the group trying to find out what happened.

It's a tricky situation to navigate, so I recommend just being as upfront and honest with the person you contacted for the comp, providing the necessary information, and then doing your best to follow instructions and arrive on time. And lastly, please keep in mind that the venue and its staff aren't purposefully doing anything to spite you and your friends; they are just doing their jobs.

What are the Criteria For Girl Comp Approval?

Aside from the number of girls needed to request a comp, the club is looking for a particular look for comp-worthy groups. They're not necessarily looking for a group of supermodels, but cute and fun girls that would look good filling their tables.

Do We Keep the Comp Table All Night?

This is the biggest disconnect in communication with almost every girl group that gets sat for a comp. Comps are there to start the party but ARE ONLY AVAILABLE UNTIL THE PAYING TABLES ARRIVE. Again, the club will choose to make money with the paying customer over the girls who are getting a free bottle.

When the paying customer arrives, they can choose whether to have the girls stay with them or ask Las Vegas security to clear out the table completely. When this happens, the girls will either be asked if they want to join another table or, unfortunately, might get left to fend for themselves. Ladies, you have been warned!

While I have booked numerous comps for ladies over the years, it's not something that I make a habit of doing. There's too much gray area in which feelings get hurt; we can look like the bad guy and with not much to gain from it. It's a harsh reality, but clubs don't care about non-paying tables. I might go out of my way to get a comp sat if we have a paid table at the same club and we can join the groups together, but otherwise, there's little to gain from promising a girl comp outright.

Most times, if the girls are hot enough to get a comp, I'm confident that they are going to get invited to or will somehow latch on to someone's table somewhere inside, but comps are not a promise that we can always keep, so I prefer to be honest with my guests and not get their hopes up too high in case it doesn't work out.
