Rock of Ages Show
Rock of Ages Show
Before it was a flub of a movie, it rocked the main stage of Broadway. Featuring musical talents that included American Idol alumn Constantine Maroulis, this one-of-a-kind tribute to classical ‘80’s Rock and Roll transported audiences to a time when bands like Van Halen, Def Leppard, Whitesnake, and Quiet Riot owned the Billboard Charts. Rock of Ages was a critical success, appealing to both a crowd new to the 80’s hair band scene and one completely familiar with the usual antics. It should come as no surprise than to hear that the successful Broadway musical has found its way onto the stage within Las Vegas’ vivacious Venetian Hotel and Resort.
Rock of Ages all but literally transports the audience back in time, to a story that involves love, loss, redemption, and quarrel – all of the things that make a musical stand on its own. This isn’t your average trip to the MET, though. Rock of Ages showcases a soundtrack of tunes that some may remember rocking out in their bedrooms too. From Starship’s ambiguous “We Built This City” to Poison’s “Every Rose Has Its Thorn”, the audience gets a taste of 30 of the 80’s most memorable ballads and high energy rock tunes.
The show features a story that pits two unlikely love interests in a battle for fame, with a villainous character thrown in to give them a real obstacle. Rock of Ages is set at a fictional lounge known as the Bourbon Room on Las Angeles Sunset Strip. The Bourbon Room is akin to any lounge / bar from the ‘80’s and showcases the usual sex, drugs, and rock and roll that one would expect to find in an establishment located on Sunset Strip. A dubious German developer steps in, hoping to transform the Bourbon Room, thus endangering the dreams of grandeur of the show’s hero and heroine.
Though the show is pegged as a musical, looking past the story, it’s nothing more than a tribute concert that pays plenty of homage to plenty of famous hair bands. While the lead player’s steal the show, there’s no doubt that the band lending its musical talents are the true heart of Rock of Ages. Arsenal fuels this long running musical with an ability to bring the ‘80s back to life through song. Never has an era been recreated so vividly through music. Extra kudos to you if you show up in your legwarmers or neon tights.
During its heyday on Broadway, Rock of Ages was a recipient of 5 Tony Award nominations. If this isn’t an indication of the quality of show, than maybe you’ll find yourself intrigued by the massive set list that includes classics like “Wanted: Dead or Alive”, “Hit Me With Your Best Shot”, and “I Wanna Rock” performed by the classic rock tribute band, Arsenal. Each song is intricately worked into the show’s main theme, ensuring that they come off more as necessary inclusions rather than staple additions to attract an audience.
